Mary Ann Tally grew up in Knoxville, Tenn. She attended college at the University of Tennessee and later graduated from Duke Law School. She subsequently joined the public defender’s office in Fayetteville, N.C. Later she was the first woman elected as President of the Academy of Trial Lawyers. Tally reflects on notable cases she litigated, experiences as a woman in the legal profession, and her philosophy regarding the death penalty.
