James A. Wellons, Jr., a native North Carolinian, graduated from Duke University and then earned his law degree at UNC School of Law. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in a legal capacity during World War II and was a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps during the Korea conflict. He worked for a year in the N.C. Attorney General’s office before joining his father and brother in private practice in Smithfield, N.C. During his career he began to specialize in criminal law. In this interview he speaks about serving on the Board of Law Examiners and his community involvement in Johnston County, including service as town attorney for Smithfield.
