William Poe was born in South Hill, Va., on December 18, 1923, but spent the majority of his childhood in Oxford, N.C. He attended Wake Forest University for his undergraduate studies. He served as an Army pilot in World War II and describes some of his experiences flying in combat missions over Austria and Germany. He attended Harvard Law School and recounts his first job working at the UNC Institute of Government, where he trained public officials. He speaks about transitioning to private law practice in Charlotte. beginning in 1952. Poe worked as a general practice attorney with a large litigation caseload. He is also a founding member of the Parker Poe law firm.
