Pender R. McElroy was born on December 25, 1940 in Madison County, N.C. He studied business at UNC during his undergraduate years. He then studied Russian language at the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, Calif., before enrolling at UNC School of Law in 1965. In this interview he discusses growing up in the Appalachian Mountains and the impact of a strong family unit. McElroy discusses his clerkship experience with Justice Bobbitt on the N.C. Supreme Court, his time as research assistant to Albert Coates, and his experiences as a transactional attorney in Charlotte.
