Judge Shirley Fulton, raised in Kingstree, S.C., completed her undergraduate studies at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro in 1977. She graduated from Duke Law School in 1980 and worked for a brief time in a general practice law firm. In 1982 she became an Assistant District Attorney in Mecklenburg County. In this interview she discusses memorable cases she managed while in the District Attorney’s office, her appointment to the N.C. District Court bench, election to the N.C. Superior Court bench in 1988, the support network her family provided during her young life, and the qualities that good judges should exhibit.
